G Herbert
The splendid memorial to the fallen members of the Congregational Church in Newbury (now on display in Newbury Town Hall) includes the name G Herbert.
Without further information it is not possible to determine which of two G Herberts thie refers to.
The two possiblities are:
Private 7711 George Henry Herbert, 2nd Battalion, Royal Berkshire Regiment
and
Private 35366, George William Herbert, 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers.
The latter is the more likely for two reasons: 1) George Henry Herbert was generally known as Henry or Harry and hence was more likely to be listed as H Herbert (as he is on the Newbury memorial); and 2) George Henry is listed on the memorials in the parish church of St Nicolas; he would not be the only Congregationalist on these memorials, but it is less likely that a nonconformist would be commemorated in an Anglican church.
