2nd Lt Lawrence Berkoff DFC / 856th Bomb Sq, 492nd ‘Carpetbaggers’ Bomb / Group, / United States Airforce / This plaque is dedicated to the memory of 2nd Lt Lawrence Barkoff who on the / night of 8th September 1944 flew his stricken B24 Liberator bomber away from / the village of Lambourn. This gallant act saved many lies on the ground and / also allowed his crew to parachute to safety. / Sadly, Lt Berkoff aged 20, died instantly when his plane crashed near Folly / Road, Lambourn. / Erected by the grateful people of Lambourn and the surrounding area
